Creating a modern rear extension in a heritage overlay

type. residential renovation and rear extension

stage. building permit

size. 400m2

The client wanted a modern extension at the rear of the property while staying respectful to the Art-Deco front façade. Building in a heritage overlay has its own challenges. We used considerate planning and thoughtful composition to create a design that satisfied the client’s need to artfully transition Art-Deco front facade into a modern and respectful rear facade, and was approved by Council.

The rear extension opened towards the backyard so that the views of the garden, pool and beyond could be fully enjoy from well inside the house. The large windows facing the garden were covered with curved roof structures to continue the Streamline Moderne style of the property. The entry lobby was modified with a new Art-Deco style stair that provides a grand view of the impressive double storey void as you enter the building.
