Creating light in long, dark and narrow buildings

type. residential renovation & extension (stage 1), new external building (stage 2)

stage. stage 1 & 2 completed

size. total 80m2

Like many homes in Melbourne, bringing light into the middle of a 5m-wide but very long footprint is difficult. We wanted to avoid setting back from the side to bring light in because that exacerbates the cramp feel of these narrow homes.

To solve this problem, we built from side boundary to side boundary, removed the side windows and added an elevated cathedral ceiling with an abundance of light shining through the skylights. This created more width, light and volume to the interior and gifted a view to the sky, significantly more inspirational compared to the side view of a paling fence.

This project also constructed a new open garage facing the rear laneway, including a rumpus room on the first floor.
